Este animal sagrado, "con grandes misterios" requiere al ser sacrificado a Changó, y a aquellos otros orishas "que comen jicotea" -Agayu, Osaín, Inle- la asistencia de cuatro personas responsables, iniciadas, que se situarán a un lado y otro del animal. Después de cortada la cabeza, se le cortan las cuatro patas comenzando por la derecha, la delantera y la trasera; y después en el mismo orden las otras dos de la izquierda.
